Month 12

Dear Sophie,Today, you are twelve months old. A year ago yesterday, your father and I got up at the crack of dawn to eat pancakes at the Bob Evans near our condo in Oakton. It was a Friday, and we drove through the just-waking neighborhoods, near the highways beginning to feel the weight of the morning rush hour, to the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington. Their computers were down, and they weren't expecting us, even though we'd pre-registered and my doctor's office had made an appointment. We got settled in, and I put on a hospital gown, and we waited. My doctor came in to induce labor, and we waited some more. Finally, at 4:20am the next day, you came into the world.
This past year has been a roller coaster. And you know how much I love roller coasters. We've moved from that condo in Oakton to a house that your daddy built for us in Falls Church. I finished school, and graduated. We were all sick, a couple of times. We went to the doctor a lot, and took your dad to the hospital twice in one month. The second time, he had to have surgery. Two of our friends also had babies, and another has one on the way. A couple of our friends have babies a little older than you, and we talked about similarities and differences, passed on ideas that worked and gave heartwrenching testimonials of things that failed.

You are so close to walking, it's amazing. You take two or three steps on your own, then stop, realize what you're doing, and sit down to crawl. You love baby dolls, and you hold them to your chest, rocking and crooning, and pat them on the back, just like a little mother does. You love to turn the pages of your board books, chewing on them as you go, but don't like to sit still long enough for someone to actually read the words on the page. Your favorite time is still the bath, and your dad and I are starting you in swimming lessons on Tuesday evenings in June.

We go out to eat a lot, and you are so good. You don't really like being put in the highchair, but you love to look at all of the people and snack on whatever is on our plates. You eat tortilla chips like you're... well... related to me! You also like to eat turkey, vienna sausages and yogurt. You love strawberries, Saltines and Goldfish crackers. We've come a long way since those sweet potato days.

You wave at everyone, even passing cars. You say 'Haaaa!' which I think means 'Hi!', and for awhile you even called everything a hat and we were so sure it was your first word. You prefer sitting in a shopping cart to sitting in your stroller, and now you smile at most everyone. You are starting to perfect your toddler whine, though. And I already know the 'Meeeeem' screech means you want something NOW.

Happy birthday, baby.
Love,
Mama

Commencement 2009

Graduation this year was a two-day extravaganza, beginning in the Smith Center, with a detour through the National Mall, and ending up, as all good graduations should, in the Air and Space Museum.

Condolences

To our friends who are infinitely more than our friends: they are our family, and a loss of theirs is a loss of ours.

Our hearts are with you.

Month 11

Dear Sophie,
Today, you are eleven months old. Every day that goes by, you develop more and more personality. You make expressions you've never made before. You show, in your own little way, that you understand more and more of what goes on around you. You are becoming less of a bystander and more of a participant in life.
You have started to play with the Vet Center that I got for you before you were even born. You like to stand at the front, and chew on all of the parts. Your favorites are the blood pressure bulb, a toy syringe, and, of course, the little vitamin bottles that I find all over the house.

These past couple of weeks DC had some glimpses of summer weather. It was a shade over 90, and we pulled out the summer clothes and played outside. At first, you didn't really like the grass poking you in your chubby little legs, but after a while you got used to it. We played out in the front yard while your Dad washed the cars, and then we went out to Fairfax Corner to see the kids running in the fountain. We stood at the very edge of the fountain, and you got wet a couple of times. Each time the water spurted up, you squealed with delight.

Oh, and you pulled my hair.

Now you eat pretty much everything. You're still pretty partial to sweet potatoes and squash, although you're pretty much done with the Puffs. Instead, you really like cheese crackers and Crunchies. Some other favorites are blueberry purree, apple juice (in a Sippy, no less!), string cheese and pears.

It's kind of crazy to know that you have been part of our lives for almost a year. An integral part. Nearly everything we do revolves around you. And it's good. I couldn't imagine it any other way.
Love,
Mama

It's complicated.

It's hard to get good pictures. Because most of my pictures look something like these.

Why Dad doesn't fix hair.

Being grown up means you get to eat chips and salsa for breakfast.

I know, it's not fair.

Again, and again.

I am not really a mommy-blogger. I don't have ads, I don't have a following, I don't Twitter. I don't even have a Facebook account. As far as I know, the only people who peruse my pictures and read my ramblings are my family and a few friends.
But I read. Every morning, I check my blogroll to see who has updated their page, who has new pictures or new ramblings for me to read. I have a pretty long list of blogs I read, some stay on the list for only a couple months, and others are such long-time favorites that I put links to on my own blogroll. Like Dooce, or Amalah, or Mr. Lady, or Matt, who are all blogosphere royalty with followings in the thousands and published books. Dooce was even on the Today show, where I am sure she met one of my idols, Ann Curry's Stylist. (If anyone knows who this is, please ask her/him to be my friend. And maybe we can go shopping?)

The interconnectedness of this world is amazing. As is the unwavering support that a lot of these writers find there.

This week, the blogosphere suddenly, inexplicably, lost two of our own.

There are no words that can be expressed to acknowledge them. Please think of their parents in your prayers, for their loss of one so very young, is just not fair.
One so very loved, so wanted, so welcomed, with futures that have been dreamed of, wondered about, planned for, hoped for, forever left unrealized, unfulfilled. But not forgotten. Never, ever forgotten.
