Month 1

Dear Claire,

You are one month old today. You are such an easy baby, and a joy to be with. Everything that seemed so hard with your sister are easy with you, but I know that a good portion of that is my fault. Learning curve and all that jazz. You do have some colic, which appears like clockwork at 7:30 and lasts until around 9ish, when you fall asleep for the night.

You have a teeny tiny hole in your belly button, a remnant of the umbilical cord that connects to your kidneys. The doctor told us to keep an eye on it, and we haven't seen any of the things she told us to look out for, so we think you're fine. You have a small curved birthmark on your left side, right above your hip bone. You have really sensitive skin, and get rashes easily from clothing tags and vigerous wiping (it's pat pat pat the bottom for you, my dear.)

You like to eat, and weighed 11 pounds at your two-week appointment. Sometimes it seems like all you do is eat. You prefer to be held straight up instead of in a cradled position, and sleep with your mouth open.

Already it seems like you've been with us for so long. I can't imagine what life would be like without you.

Love,
Mama

The Top 10 Best Things about Being Pregnant:
#10: Nobody looks at you funny for eating peanut butter, jelly and mayo sandwiches.
#9: Having 3 chins is considered normal.
#8: People think you're funny when you give the sign of the cross and run away when they try to rub your belly.
#7: Nobody really cares what you wear.
#6: Since you can't reach your legs, you don't have to shave.
#5: Second Lunch.
#4: Most of the time, people give you their seat on the Metro.
#3: Everyone lets you pick the restaurant, and nobody complains about eating Indian food three times a week. (Claire liked the spicy curry, Sophie was a chips and hot salsa baby.)
#2: Shopping for teeny tiny everything.
#1: You're going to have a baby!

The Top 10 Things About Having a Baby:
#10: Everyone wants you to take naps.
#9: The disposable mesh underwear they give you in the hospital.
#8: Maternity leave, although I still wish the US was more like Norway, France, or even Canada.
#7: Coffee. In normal, caffinated quantities.
#6: You can see your feet.
#5: SUSHI.
#4: The meds are nice.
#3: Third trimester insomnia is cured.
#2: So is the gestational diabetes! No more pricking fingertips!
#1: You have a baby!

The one where Claire has the hiccups.

This was taken in the dead middle of the night while we were still in the hospital. Maybe this is funny to me because Sophie and I get the hiccups all the time, or maybe it's just the meds.

Welcome to the world! (Claire does Arlington)

On December 29, 2011, at 8:39am, we added to our little family.

Claire Amanda came to us at the Virginia Hospital Center, via scheduled c-section. Claire weighed in at 8lbs, 7oz, is 20 1/2 inches long, and has 10 fingers and 10 toes.

With Daddy and Aunt Monica.

Claire's billirubin levels were high, so she had to be 'baked' for 12 hours. She was not a fan.

Already a Caps fan, Claire made sure we were home and comfortable before the start of the Winter Classic.

And like her sister before her, Claire heartily demonstrated an instant dislike to her carseat.
